GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The CARPENTER performs skilled journey-level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of structures and furniture. Work is performed in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a single classification and not currently part of a series of classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Building Construction. Typical tasks: constructs room additions, office space, work areas, cabinets and counters; builds foundation forms, frames structures, and does finish work such as installing windows and doors, trimming, and installing locks and hardware.
2. Remodeling of Existing Structures. Typical tasks: reviews plans; establishes time and material required to complete a project; performs required demolition; frames walls, doors, ceilings; attaches covering materials such as plywood sheathing, wallboard and paneling; installs doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, millwork and hardware. May direct the activities of others.
3. Maintenance of Buildings and Furniture. Typical tasks: performs general carpentry work on floors, roofs, stairs, partitions, doors, windows, screens, and a variety of wood fixtures; repairs tables, desks, chairs, benches, and other furniture; much of this work requires furniture and cabinetmaking skills, using stationary power tools in a woodworking shop such as power saws, joiners, planers, sanding and routing machines.
4. Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: cleans, sharpens, and repairs tools; maintains project records; orders supplies and maintains inventory of materials. May be required on occasion to perform other construction related activities such as installing plumbing, electrical work, painting, plastic laminate, floor and ceiling tile, and/or finishing concrete.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Employees in this class are in daily contact with agency staff and other trades workers to coordinate assigned tasks and with the public and/or patients in an institution or facility during the course of the construction or remodeling work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Employees in this class receive general instructions or work orders from a supervisor who reviews work upon completion for quality, timeliness, and adherence to cost estimates. Work is guided by architectural plans, work orders, State and local building codes, fire, safety and health codes.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Positions are found in central and remote locations throughout State government (e.g., general government agencies, human or natural resource agencies, correctional, mental health, or higher education institutions, hospitals, etc.). They require the willingness to work within the environment associated with the position's location. They require the willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather. They require the willingness to walk, stand and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. They require the willingness to work from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations such as on roofs. They require the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odor, and high levels of noise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• experience as a skilled carpenter.  The experience must include form building; rough framing; outside and inside finishing; layout; care and use of tools and woodworking machinery; blueprint reading; and application of safety standards and codes; OR

• completion of an apprenticeship (four years) under a skilled carpenter which included experience as listed above.
